NOSTALGIA BSET300AQ Toaster Oven’s unique selling proposition is obvious straight out of the box.If you notice through the window that your meal is sufficiently cooked but the timer is still running, you can simply turn off the appliance and retrieve your meal. If you’ve never used a toaster oven to prepare the meal you are about to make, you can simply use the clear view window to track its cooking progress to avoid overcooking. Let’s talk about the unit’s clear view window too that has been put in place to make the appliance easy to use for total beginners. If you’re new to toaster ovens and do not know what a natural convection is, it simply implies that unlike convection toaster ovens that retail with a fan to blow hot air around inside the appliance, this appliance’s interior has been designed using shapes that will force air to move equally in all parts of the oven. The appliance’s natural convection design will ensure that both rows receive an equal amount of heat. When preparing meals or snacks that do not need a lot of heat to cook (such as cookies), that’s when you can use the two racks at the same time. What is even more interesting is the fact that you can even use the two racks at the same time. If preparing a meal that needs a low heat intensity, however, then you will have to use the rack at the bottom away from the top heating elements. This means that while preparing a meal that requires a higher heat intensity to cook, you can use the rack position at the top to place the meal closer to the heating elements. As you can probably already tell from the product’s image above, it boasts two rack positions. After all, if the unit is good enough to handle the needs of a restaurant, then you can rest assured that it will seamlessly meet the needs of your household – whatever the number of people. For more information, go to Most of my fellow coking enthusiasts own restaurants – and when I saw this Nostalgia RTOV2RR Toaster Oven in their cafeterias delivering some of the most perfectly toasted slices, I promised myself that if I were to ever create a guide on the best Nostalgia toaster ovens or best commercial toaster ovens, then I would without a doubt include it. Traveling families today could be single moms or dads with one or more children, multi-generational families, families with two dads or two moms, and more. No longer are there only 2-parent 2-child families. San Jose and SJO Airport are due north of Manuel Antonio, approximately 170 km or 2.5 hours drive away.Looking for a family-friendly summer vacation destination?įamily travel is changing as the demographics of families change around the world. Manuel Antonio is a suburb of the port town, Quepos, on the Central Pacific coast. Of course, there are tourist-geared attractions, shops, etc., but the number of people/tourists pales in comparison to most other tourist geared destinations in Latin America or the Caribbean, and most beach destinations in the United States are beyond comparison. In the busiest of seasons, there are only enough rooms for another 4,000 or so tourists. Quepos, Manuel Antonio, and the immediate surrounding area combined only have a population of around 22,000 people. But one look down the jungle-lined beaches of Manuel Antonio, and you’ll understand! Some areas such as Jaco or Tamarindo are not as restricted. Why are most hotels located on the hillside?Ĭosta Rica has strict maritime zone building regulations to ensure natural sectors stay that way. January through April is the best of the best, but if you can deal with a little rain here and there, you can add May, June, and July to the list. Of course, passing storms can change everything. From December through July, average daytime temperatures are usually in the 80’s-90’s, with night temps dipping around 15 degrees. Even then, there will be periods of clear weather in-between. Most people consider the rainy season to be May through November, but the real consistent rains are from mid-August through mid-November. Weather in Costa Rica is affected more by precipitation than temperature changes, as is the case in Manuel Antonio. Lock your doors when you go out, use your hotel safe, and of course, don’t leave valuables unattended. Petty theft can be an issue, but nearly always in the form of opportunistic crime. Violent crime is practically non-existent. If you only have a couple of days, you may consider the Poas Volcano and La Paz Waterfall Gardens (4 hours), in the mountains near San Jose. San Gerardo de Dota (3 hours) is an amazing off the beaten path birdwatching and cloud forest destination. Other considerations would include beaches further south such as Dominical (45 minutes) for surfing, or Uvita (1 hour) for gorgeous beaches and dolphin and whale watching in Marino Ballena National Park. There are several river crossings on the roads to Drake Bay, which are often impassable, so most visitors either fly there or take a boat from Sierpe. These locations offer some of Costa Rica's finest wildlife observation. Drake Bay offers easy access to the Sirena and San Pedrillo Stations. The biologically diverse Corcovado National Park on the Osa Peninsula is a great destination for anybody seeking a remote off the beaten path adventure with plenty of wildlife and an outside chance of seeing rare large cat species or tapirs. You’ll find the best hanging bridges and zip line adventures in this region. Monteverde is also the canopy capital of Costa Rica. The enchanting cloud forest is home to many species of highland birds and rare wildlife. Monteverde Cloud Forest (4 hours drive) is another popular destination to combine with Manuel Antonio. Arenal offers some of the best tour operators in Costa Rica, so if adventure or hot springs are on your list, Arenal is a no-brainer! While the conical volcano provides an incredible backdrop to everything in the area, the real draw is the hot springs, amazing adventure activity options, and of course natural beauty. Arenal Volcano or Monteverde are top attractions while others add destinations further south such as the Osa Peninsula and Corcovado National Park for even more wildlife.Īrenal Volcano (4-5 hours drive or 1-hour flight) will be the obvious choice for most people as it has so much to offer. There are plenty of exciting and unique places to connect with Manuel Antonio on your Costa Rican vacation, but it depends on your interests. What are the best places to combine with Manuel Antonio on my vacation? Many squirrel baffles are designed to twirl or tilt if a squirrel climbs onto them, keeping the animal off balance and unable to access the feeder. Get a domed baffle, a disk-like object that wraps around the pole about 6 inches below the feeder to prevent access from the ground. The baffles should be at least 15 to 18 inches wide or long to prevent squirrels from reaching around them. Some feeders come equipped with cages, or you can easily add mesh, such as chicken wire, around an existing feeder.ģ. This is also useful for preventing larger bully birds, such as starlings, grackles, blue jays, and pigeons, from accessing the feeder. Squirrels will not fit through small wire openings, which will not restrict smaller birds from feeding. You can also place a wire cage around a bird feeder. Place an 8-foot pipe 2 feet into the ground for your bird feeder to have a 6-foot height. Grease or wax the pole from the ground to about 6 inches from the top with non-drying automotive grease or Carnuba wax. A 3/4-inch conduit pipe is ideal, but any rust-free heavy metal pipe will work. Squirrels can jump distances of 10 feet or greater, so place feeders 8 to 10 feet away from a tree, roof, fence, or any structure that could be a launching pad for squirrels. Ideally, mount or hang feeders on a smooth metal pole at least six feet high and prune back any branches or bushes within a 12-foot radius.Ĭritters, including raccoons, can climb wooden poles or PVC pipes. It’s important to place any birdfeeder within at least three feet of the nearest window so that birds don’t hurt themselves upon liftoff, or place them more than 30 feet away so that feeding birds have plenty of space to clear the house.Ģ. Window strikes at people’s homes kill at least 150 million birds annually in the United States. Bird feeders help birds, but they also increase the likelihood of deadly window impacts. They can be nailed or tied to a tree trunk, suspended, or affixed to the side of a hopper feeder.ġ. Suet feeders may be constructed of wire mesh or plastic-coated wire mesh or be a simple mesh onion bag. This design usually excludes the annoying starlings, which have trouble perching that way. Suet cages that open only at the bottom force birds to hang upside down while feeding. Suet feeders attract a variety of woodpeckers, nuthatches, chickadees, titmice, jays, and starlings. The tube feeder is usually more squirrel-resistant than the platform or house feeder, though nothing is entirely squirrel-proof! The tube does a nice job of keeping the seed dry, but the seed that collects at the bottom of the tube can be a place for mold and bacteria to grow. When adding new seeds to tube feeders, always empty the old seeds out first. Long, cylindrical tube feeders suspended in the air will bring in an array of small birds, including finches, titmice, sparrows, nuthatches, grosbeaks, siskins, and chickadees. They are squirrel magnets, so a baffle is crucial if you don’t want to feed the furry birds. While they carry a few days of seed, you also need to be sure it doesn’t get wet and the house is tightly sealed-otherwise, bacteria and fungus can develop, both of which are dangerous to birds. House feeders can be mounted on a pole or suspended. Hung from a tree or mounted on a pole, “house-style” feeders with seed hoppers and perches on the side usually entice grosbeaks, cardinals, and jays. Don’t add too much seed at a time-perhaps one or two day’s worth-and shake out the bottom every time you add new seeds. Even with drainage, the bottom should be removable for fairly frequent cleaning. The best tray feeders have a screened, rather than solid, bottom to promote complete drainage at the very least, tray feeders should have several drainage holes. Note that tray feeders offer limited protection against rain and snow. Place it one to three feet above the ground. If you do wish to cater to a specific kind of feathered friend in your area, consider the following four basic types of feeders: Platform FeederĪ platform feeder or a bird feeder with a built-in tray will attract the widest variety of seed-eating birds, especially ground-feeding birds like juncos, towhees, and mourning doves. Also, look for feeders designed with doors or hatches that will close when triggered by a squirrel’s weight but not by a lighter bird’s weight. To cut down on our “furry bird” consumption, choose metal feeders or designs with thick, sturdy materials that squirrels will be less able to damage. Squirrels! If you have a lot of squirrels in the area, be ready to feed them, too.A bird feeder needs a hook, a pole, and a baffle to keep predators away. (If you’re giving/getting a gift, adding bird food is a great idea!) We have a chart on what different types of birds like to eat: Wild Food Bird Preferences. It can be expensive to keep bird feeders filled, so recognize that you’ll need to fill them with seed or suet. The emergence and spread of this fit and aggressive lineage within the European pathogen population highlights the evolutionary potential of the pathogen and its destructive powers. “The disease proved more difficult to control due to a combination of increased aggressiveness, an ability to overcome some sources of cultivar resistance and its resistance to a key fungicide. The new lineage raises a worldwide food security issue as it has already spread beyond Europe – where it was first detected – to North Africa, India and China, threatening the livelihoods of communities relying on potato for food and income. Through DNA-based forensic analysis, research leader Dr David Cooke and partners describe the emergence and spread of highly aggressive lineages of Phytophthora infestans, the pathogen that causes potato late blight, that have rapidly displaced other genotypes in Europe, making the plant disease more difficult to manage.ĭr Cooke explained: “Pest and pathogen losses jeopardise global food security, as proven by the devastating spread of late blight across European crops back in 1845. This is underlined in a new study from the James Hutton Institute, the Sainsbury Lab and other partners, which has also found that the problem is particularly acute in emerging countries in Africa and Asia. nonetheless, growers must remain alert.Ī pathogen responsible for a plant disease that has caused food shortages and major loss of life in the past, such as the Irish Potato Famine of 1845, still poses a significant threat to global food security. Total crop failure is, fortunately, a thing of the past. |
